Production of residual fraction

Data from Balearic Islands

The residual fraction is that which includes all the waste that has not been collected in the selective collection fractions and that, therefore, cannot receive quality recycling.

Moving towards a zero waste society means reducing as much as possible the amount of waste collected with the residual fraction.

The average production of residual fraction for the Balearic Islands has maintained an increasing trend until 2018, after which the trend changes and a constant reduction is observed until the minimum generation of the analysed series is reached in 2023. The generation of residual fraction in 2023 was 17% lower than in 2013.
The reduction in the generation of the residual fraction is closely related to an improvement in selective collection, encouraged by the approval of Law 8/2019 on waste and contaminated soils of the Balearic Islands and, subsequently, Law 7/2022 on waste and contaminated soils for a circular economy.
