The per capita waste generation of the Balearic Islands suffered a considerable decrease from 2019, after a continuous increase the previous 5 years. This decrease can be attributed mainly to the health crisis due to covid-19, causing a generalized decrease in waste, especially in 2020 and in territories with a large influx of tourism, such as the Balearic Islands. In 2021, an increase in waste generation per capita is again observed, attributable to an improvement in the economic situation and an increase in tourism.

Waste generation per capita in 2023 has increased by 8%, if only the legal population is taken into account, and by 1.3% if the human pressure index (HPI) is considered, compared to 2010. The Balearic Islands are far from achieving the prevention targets set by Law 7/2022 on waste and contaminated soils for a circular economy: 13% reduction of waste generated by 2025 and 15% by 2030, compared to 2010.
