This indicator shows the percentage of recycling of municipal waste generated, i.e., waste that does not have a final destination (landfill or incineration).
This percentage includes, therefore, material recycling and composting and anaerobic digestion of organic waste.
In the last 20 years, the percentage of waste sent for recycling in Spain has doubled, from 18.4% in 2000 to 36.7% in 2021.
The growing trend in the amount of waste for recycling is positive, although it is still far from the recycling target of 55% by 2025, as set by European standards.
