More than 40% of the household waste generated is organic waste. For this reason, collecting the organic fraction selectively is key to increasing the values of selective collection of municipal waste, preventing the contamination of other fractions with organic waste and valorizing the organic matter in the form of compost to take advantage of the nutrients that they can provide to the soil.
Evolution of the number of municipalities in the Balearic Islands that have a separate collection of the household organic fraction

During the period studied (2010-2022), the number of Balearic municipalities with selective collection of the household organic fraction presents, overall, an increasing trend. In 2022, 88% of the islands’ municipalities (59 municipalities) had this service, an increase of 23% compared to 2010.
