Reuse and preparation for reuse

Data from Catalunya

In the European hierarchy of waste management, reuse and preparation for reuse occupy one of the main rungs, being the most important actions after waste prevention. Even so, it is observed how, in practice, they do not have a significant representation within the current management system.

To guarantee the reintroduction to the market of materials with the potential to be reused and to boost second-hand markets, measures must be adopted to increase the quality and quantity of their selective collection. It is necessary to highlight the high potential for job creation which involves the recovery and repair of materials.

Note: Data could only be obtained from associations and recovery companies in the network AERESS (Spanish association of recoveries of social and solidarity economy). The materials with the highest reuse rate are represented: textiles, bulky waste and WEEE.

The most reused or prepared for reuse material out of the total collected by the entities is, both in quantity and percentage, the textiles, with percentages 10 times higher than those of bulky waste and WEEE.

It is necessary to implement mechanisms that allow increasing the quantity and quality of the materials that arrive at the reuse centers, preventing them from suffering damage during their delivery and transportation, especially for bulky WEEE, to facilitate their reuse; as well as to provide resources so that entities can process and output the large amount of materials they receive.
